BACK TO THOSE MILLER DAYS!

Glenn happy copy

It’s been quite awhile since I posted to this blog. I’m going to ease back into it with a somewhat lighthearted Glenn Miller post.

My Miller collection started around 1964 when my Dad bought me the second Miller RCA Camden LP compilation, CAL-829, THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS BY GLENN MILLER AND HIS ORCHESTRA.  The one with the powder-blue cover and a color portrait of Glenn offering a slightly nervous smile.  The selection was somewhat lopsided, containing seven Ray Eberle vocals (one with the Modernaires) and three instrumentals. I guess my fondness for Eberle stems from this LP, which I played to death.

When I purchased the first Miller Camden LP on my own, THE GREAT GLENN MILLER AND HIS ORCHESTRA, (CAS-751), I discovered that there were other singers in the band, namely Tex Beneke, Marion Hutton, Skip Nelson and more of the Modernaires.  Ray got six vocals this time around.  The fake stereo version I bought had so much echo added that it sounded like the band was playing in the Lincoln Tunnel, but that was OK by me.

By the time two more Miller Camden albums were issued in 1967 and 1969, I had already been wallowing in many of the full-priced RCA issues, but I have always retained a warm spot for those $1.98 budget discs that had started me off.

I was delighted to find that Camden hadn’t forgotten the other big bands on the RCA Victor payroll and eventually acquired the two Benny Goodmans, two Tommy Dorseys, five (!) Artie Shaws, one Bunny Berigan and the delightful compilation, GREAT BANDS OF OUR TIME.

None of the other major labels had a budget line that devoted as much space to the big bands as Camden.

Some times when I can’t fall asleep at night, instead of counting sheep, I compile Glenn Miller RCA Camden reissues in my head (no kidding) and soon am snoring to the strains of “Slumber Song.”

So here are a few of the Glenn Miller LP “theme” compilations I’ve devised that RCA Camden never released:
